  God's Name Discussion

  several weeks ago, i was attending a meeting with my wife and i brought my king james translation of the bible with me.

  one of the brothers came up to me after the meeting and asked me what translation did i have and i showed it to him.

  he asked if i knew that god's name appeared in that translation and i said, "yes, psalms 83:18 i do believe.

  I think this is going to be more the issue before you even get to looking at the whole devine name issue. Witnesses are taught almost from the begining t not to believe anything other than that sanctioned by the WBTS.

  If he isn't going to even recognise your source or the validity of it, it kind of blows any chance of putting forth your case that he is wrong or misinformed.

  However when you read the article it makes them sound as if they have been around since the beginning when reality is only 130 years and that was as a breakaway from another movement!

  I read this awake. Recently my MIL has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately she is fine after surgery. However during a conversation i made the comment that i was concerned that the "crazies" would persuade her to refuse some treatment.

  Anyway MIL was informed and decided that I should read this piece of propaganda!

  Here are my observations!

  Inside cover - Picture would you seriously let these people in your house. Ok the woman looks cute but the bloke looks creepy

  Pae 4 &5 - What others have said. I tried to find the quotes on other sites, however came up no luck, but in virtually all the quotes there is the snip marker showing that they have edited the quote, which means you don't have the full context.

  Also the counties listed are:

  France

  Ukraine

  Italy

  UK

  Holland

  Mexico

  Brazil

  As some of these countries are currently restricting or investigating the JW religion and business operations its almost ironic the dubs would use them as propaganda!

  I am quite sure everyone on this site sees the claim here! JW broke away from the 7th day adventist. So what does that make you........

  this afternoon i got a letter stating that i was accepted to accompany a ww 2 veteran on a flight to washington dc to visit the ww2 memorial in september.. www.honorflight.org.

  i also was called to check up on the health of several horses that some friends of my wife adopted, they are very underweight belgians, and these.

  new owners want to make sure that they are taken care of.

  a predatory jw paedophile micheal porter (uk) who has a 15 year record of abuse including the rape of his own baby but somehow evaded jail now is a member of my old congregation;wimbledon.

  words fail me, to think of the years of shunning that these idiots have heaped upon me even by my own family and this piece of shit was seen a this years memorial laughing and joking with the congregation.

  strange that this news story slipped passed me when it was broadcast by the british media in 2007..

  I under stand the concerns of jookbeard and others regarding Mr Porter and they are totaly valid. Even as an outsider the thought of him and others under the same roof as kids is a little concerning and my personal view is that he shouldn't be there. Its like putting matches infront of an arsonist and I will try to explain the theory.

  Sexual addition is like any other, such as alcohol, drugs, internet. Beyond the physical dependency, there is always a risk that you will relapse back to your devient behaviour because of mentality, and therapy is as much about managing and addressing the mental defects that lead to you behaviour as the physical ones. But it not like an illness where you have the therapy and thats it your fixed. Its a constant ongoing process and needs maintaining.

  One of the keys to maintaining a good state is not to put yourself in positions of risk. For an alcoholic this would be keeping clear of drinking buddies or a bar on your own. Each person is different but the basics is not to put yourself in a place where you have access to the victims, tools of the devient behaviour etc.

  Door to door witnessing and being in a KH as a "brother in good standing" where people may entrust you with their children are not really low risk situations.

  Add to this that 2 of the most common forms of abuse are religious (god will be angry if you don't...) and authority (I am a elder / MS / with privilages and you want o keep me happy......) and there is a real danger.

  The other area of concern is that JW don't believe in professional mental help. It is certainly not promoted in their literature and if you have problems then they should be discussed with an elder. As is obvious from this board that really has not worked well in the past.

  The issue with this is that the Witness mentality thinking may shut doors that stop the inviduals devient behaviour. Add to that the coucilling from elders not to seek proffesional help and you have a ticking timebomb. Read more and pray harder is not going to solve this one. Add to this the reluctance of elders to involve authorities in the groups matters (other religions as as bad before anyone slams me) and its really not a good situation

  In the UK there is an organisation called the "Stop it now" group http://www.stopitnow.org.uk/ who are linked with the lucy fairchild foundation. If anyone has concerns they should talk to this group.

  If I recall corectly, in the UK you had to have a CRB and extended check to work with kids and vunerable persons, I am guessing it doesn't apply to those of religious authority? I know it does to charities, governments and commercial entities.

  my wife and i was talking about one of the talks that they had concerning marriage and how each spouse is suppose to put the other spouse first and that as long as both spouses did this, it would work out for the greater good of the marriage.. i agreed but added a point in that sometimes, either because of human frailties on the part of your spouse or some other reason, you spouse may not be fulfilling all your needs and sometimes you will just need to take care of your own needs.

  i tried to emphasize that this did not mean placing your needs ahead of the marriage or family or even your spouses, but simply sometimes we need to take care of our own needs and not always expect the spouse to do it for us.. she did not like the 'tone' and 'attitude' of my remark and when i brought up an example, it really set her off.. the example had to do with birthdays.

  since my wife is a witness, obviously she will not be throwing me a party, at least don't expect her too.

  I hear you on this one and also the birthdays. My wife is still a little reluctent on the birthday celebrations but getting better, MIL just constantly harks on about how they are wrong and not allowed by the bible! The MIL seems to forget that I am not a witness and that I have right to celebrate my birthday as much as she chooses not to. But there is a reason for this........

  Unfortunately witnesses are taught to see everything as the WBTS way or no way. Nothing is missed and everything is touched upon by the WBTS with this polarized thinking. Birthdays, education, marriage, life, death so on and so forth with the WBTS telling them what to think, do and say and that this is the only way. Even if you were to show to your wife that this is a form of limited thinking and highly negative and there has to be give and take, she may not be able to recognize it in herself due to the contanst WBTS mantra of "disobey the rules of WBTS = no everlasting life"

  i also thought it was interested they would say "type the phrase "end of the world" and the year "2012" into one popular internet search engine".

  i thought they want to discourage use of the internet.

  another classic mis-quote of the WBTS!

  Respected scientists, such as Stephen Hawking, professor emeritus at the University of Cambridge, and Sir Martin Rees, Master of Trinity College at the University of Cambridge, echo those stark warnings. They feel that mismanagement of technology and the human impact on the environment may irreversibly change life on earth or even end civilization.

  Here's what they really said about the subject:

  Stephen Hawking said that in the future we would work together as one unified group to solve the problems of the world. The problems are known and solutions too however political short-sightedness, racial differences so on and so forth will stop that and won't happen in our lifetimes.

  Sir Martin Rees did write a book called our final century or in the USA called our final hour (in a speech he said that it was called this in the us due to their need for instant gratification) however in the same speech he said that the world be around for a another 6 billion years until it is vapourized by the sun and the book was to highlight the concerns of science advancing unchecked without a moral compass. He also said that due to evolution that our species will be very different seeing the end of the world when compared to us today.

  If the earth is going to be around for 6m years, how the hell are the GB going to explain that one off as "one generation"????
